Around Halloween, we all get a little spooked when things go bump in the night. Our hearts start racing as we imagine the ghosts and ghouls that might be lurking in the shadows. Sometimes, the scariest things are what we CAN’T see.

Forget the ghosts and ghouls – we’ve got real problems that can’t always be easily detected right away. Computer viruses are lurking all around, both online and offline, waiting for the next unsuspecting victim. Sometimes, with just a click, you could be downloading malicious software onto your device faster than you can say hocus-pocus.

Here are a few tips to prevent computer viruses from infecting your device:

1. Install Anti-Virus Software

This should be step #1 when you get a new device – make sure it is secure! When your device starts acting slow or suspicious, it could be too late. It’s worth spending a little bit of money to protect your personal information in the long run.

2. Be Wary of Public Wi-Fi

Whether you are at a coffee shop or a library, using free Wi-Fi that is not password protected can put your device and your information at risk. Make sure the network connection you’re using is secure and safe before connecting.

3. Think Before You Click

This should be a no-brainer for most, but remember not to click on pop-up ads or banner ads that look suspicious – especially those that say, “You’re a winner! Collect your prize!” or any other deceiving headlines. The same goes for emails. Don’t open emails from people you don’t know or that have suspicious subject lines. Always err on the side of caution when clicking links on the Internet!

4. Create Strong Passwords

Make sure when creating a password for different websites, you use a variety of characters such as uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. This makes it much more difficult for your account to be hacked. Also, remember to switch up your passwords – using the same password for everything means that IF you were to get a virus or get hacked, all of your accounts are at risk.

5. Update Your Operating System Regularly

Whether you use a Mac or PC, these systems are constantly making updates and changes to make your device run more efficiently and securely. When you have an update available for your device, don’t wait to download it.
