It's OK to talk about it
Some people consider data backups and disaster recovery to be topics that just aren't discussed in polite society. After all -- who wants to acknowledge that bad things happen. And there are some reliability issues, too.  Do you really want to trust your business future to a thirty dollar flash drive or a removable hard drive designed to store pictures on your home computer? Is it safe? 
Experts recommend that backup tapes or other media be taken offsite for storage.  And they're generally ignored.  People will just pop that tape into their fire safe and figure that's good enough.  But remember this....that safe is "fire proof".  Not "heat proof."  And tape melts.  So do flash drives and other portable media.  Excessive heat can scramble magnetic data.  And then there's water damage, whether it's from a sprinkler system, a fire hose or just a hole in the roof.  The best place for your data is far away, but also where you can easily access it if necessary.
